Frequently Asked Questions
Does this plan cover major medical costs?
No. The MEC+ Essentials plan is designed for outpatient, day-to-day health needs like seeing a doctor for the flu, getting a prescription, or mental health counseling. It does not include financial sharing for major medical events, surgeries, or emergency room visits.
Am I eligible for MEC+ Essentials?
You are eligible if you have income related to self-employment, a small business with 2-50 employees, or 1099 based work. This is due to government requirements for establishing an HSA account. If your employment status does not meet these guidelines it may be flagged during an IRS audit but sharing requests you submit to MPB Health will never be rejected due to your employment status. It should be noted that any income, regardless of amount, qualifies so now could be a good time to start that pet rock business and sell one to your neighbor (as long as you report the income on your tax return).
What documentation is required to enroll?
You will need to provide either your businesses EIN number or your social security number, whichever one you use to file your federal taxes.
Can I see any doctor?
No, you must see a doctor in the PHCS network for preventive service care. Please see the link above to verify your doctor's network status.
How does the hospital debt relief work?
If you incur a large hospital bill, you are not alone. While this plan does not pay the bill, the MPB Health team acts as your advocate. They assist you in navigating the hospital's financial assistance process and work to identify programs that may help reduce your balance.
Is an HSA account provided?
No. While the MEC+ Essentials plan qualifies you to have an HSA account for you and your family members, you will be responsible for creating your own account and managing contributions and withdrawals. See our blog post on Lively as an HSA custodian .
Is my monthly premium tax deductible?
The MEC and HSA enablement components of the MEC+ Essentials plan are insurance and therefore may be tax deductible at a rate of $63.75 for Member Only memberships and $101.25 for all other household sizes. Consult your tax preparer for advice.
